Young People of Ourside Youth Centre Bring Creativity to Life

Over the past eight weeks, the young people of Ourside Youth Centre in Evesham embarked on an inspiring creative journey that blended imagination, collaboration, and skill-building. Delivered by Severn Arts, The Forge is a creative project that offers participants the chance to explore a variety of artforms, guided by professional artists and mentors. Participants from Ourside Youth Centre chose to explore visual arts, and their project culminated in a vibrant exhibition that celebrated their achievements.

Severn Arts are based in Worcester and has long been committed to widening access to the arts for children and young people. The Forge is a programme of free, high quality creative activities for anyone aged 11 to 18 living, learning, or working in Worcestershire. It offers a variety of creative opportunities and invites young people to choose the artforms and projects that they would like to pursue together. This particular project was funded by Wychavon council and Ourside.

Visiting artists Mark Riley and Emily Kaye worked closely with the young people, guiding them in and bringing their ideas to life. Their expertise and encouragement helped participants experiment with new techniques, refine their skills, and transform initial concepts into finished works of art.

Painting and sculpture emerged as common themes, yet each young person’s ideas were wonderfully unique. Over the weeks, they explored a wide range of artforms, with their creations gradually taking shape. Along the way, they embraced challenges, tried new techniques, and discovered fresh ways to express themselves. This journey not only sparked curiosity but also helped them grow in confidence. In the end, the project was as much about self-discovery as it was about producing art.

The project concluded with a joyful exhibition, where friends, families, and community members were invited to view the young people’s creations. The event showcased not only the artworks themselves but also the energy, imagination, and teamwork that had gone into producing them. It was a celebration of creativity, inclusivity, and the power of the arts to bring people together.
